Can Veganism Cause Nutritional Deficiencies?

In today’s video I answer the question, “Can Veganism Cause Nutritional Deficiencies?”

It’s not uncommon for me to read in the comments section of a vegan post about ex-vegans and vegetarians that gave up the lifestyle due to an unwell feeling. They commonly blame nutritional deficiencies and notice subsequent health after returning meat, dairy, or eggs to their diet.

While I do not blame anyone for seeking better health, it’s important to understand that veganism does NOT cause nutritional deficiencies.

Firstly, understand that the most common nutritional deficiency in the world is iron. About 30% of the world’s population is deficient in iron and this is usually caused by a lack of iron in the diet. We know that a much smaller percentage of the population identifies as vegan or vegetarian, which means that many meat eaters are iron deficient.

Some iron rich foods that are important to incorporate into your intake are soybeans, lentils, navy and kidney beans, chickpeas, sesame seeds, and dark leafy green vegetables like spinach and swiss chard.

What I hope that everyone will take from this information is that nutritional deficiencies can occur in ANY restrictive diet. If you are restricting the types of foods (not eating enough variety) or if you are restricting the amount of food (not eating enough), you increase your risk of nutritional deficiencies.
